Old school class photo: bring every face back
On a class photo, each face is only a few millimetres across. The tool doubles the resolution and rebuilds every face it detects, then blends it back in. The tiniest or most turned faces can slip through: a few choices when you scan make a big difference.

Scanning a class photo well
- Scan at a good resolution
300 dpi is usually enough for a large print, 600 dpi for a small one. A scanner also avoids the edge distortion phone photos often have.
- Crop by row for big groups
A large image is scaled down to 1,600 px on the long side before processing. For a big class, also send one crop per row: each face gets more pixels and is detected more easily.
- Write down the names
Scan the back, or the class list if there is one: it will help caption the print and work out who is who.
How it works
- 1. Digitise Scan the whole photo, then prepare crops by row if needed.
- 2. Upload Send up to 20 files at once. "Auto colour" colourises a black and white photo; "Keep B&W" leaves it without colour.
- 3. Compare Look closely at the faces with the before/after slider and check each one was rebuilt.
- 4. Share 10×15 cm prints at €1.90 for old classmates, or an HD pack of 10 or 30 to send the files round.
What the tool does well, and what it misses
- Good: lots of faces at once Every detected face is cropped, rebuilt and blended back with a soft edge, however many there are.
- Good: grain on old prints It is smoothed during the ×2 enlargement.
- Worth knowing: tiny faces A face under about 24 pixels, or strongly turned, may not be detected: it is then only enlarged.
- Worth knowing: the board and lettering The school name or year chalked on a board can be smoothed by the enlargement.
Frequently asked questions
Will every pupil be restored?
Every one the tool detects, generally front-on faces of a reasonable size. Cropping by row helps with large classes.
Can it tell me who my classmates were?
The tool does not recognise people. For the detective work, see identifying people in old photos.
Which size suits a big class photo?
A 20×25 cm fine art print or a 28×35 cm frame gives faces more room than 10×15 cm. The Studio warns you if the image is too small; see which print size.
How much to send copies to a reunion?
The preview is free. Each 10×15 cm print is €1.90, HD included, and tracked delivery is free from €39. Or get the HD for €1.99 and share it yourself.
